Your first concrete pour: a plain-language walkthrough
June 10, 2026
The biggest barrier to making garden stepping stones isn't skill — it's the idea that concrete is complicated. It isn't. Here's what you need and what to do.
What you need
- A bag of quickset concrete mix (60 lb covers roughly 4–5 stepping stones at 1.5-inch depth)
- Your mold, lightly oiled or sprayed with a release agent
- A bucket and a margin trowel
- Water — about 3 quarts per 60-lb bag
- A flat, level surface to pour on
The mix
Add water slowly. The mix should feel like thick peanut butter — it holds its shape when you mound it, but doesn't crumble. Too wet and your stone will be weak. Too dry and it won't fill the mold cleanly.
The pour
Fill the mold halfway, tap the sides firmly to settle the mix and push out air pockets, then fill the rest. Smooth the back flat with your trowel. If you're adding handprints or mosaic tiles, now is the window — usually 20–30 minutes after pouring.
Curing
Leave the stone in the mold for 24 hours minimum, 48 hours is better. Keep it out of direct sun and covered with plastic if the weather is hot and dry. After 28 days it reaches full strength, but it's safe to place after 48 hours.
Unmolding
Flex the mold gently. The stone should pop free cleanly. If it sticks, a light tap on the back usually does it. Rinse the mold before your next pour.
That's the whole process. Start to finish, your first stone takes about an hour of active time.
